Virtual Learning Expedition (VLE) is a special form of collaborative, online and
off-line inquiry. It thrives on questions that matter, strategically chosen challenges and
opportunities. It has a discovery focus of high portent to the organization, shared
by all members of the . It is supported by a knowledge ecosystem, proven methodology,
and professional facilitation.
Typically, the Expedition has three kinds of outcome:
a) Learning outcome
Breakthroughs in insight and capabilities, including enhanced individual and collective
competence in collaboration learning.
b) Research outcome
New discoveries in domains of theory and action pertinent to the expedition’s purpose.
c) Development outcome
VLE also produces a tangible knowledge product, e.g.: a product launch plan, or a pattern
library of successful practices in the domain of inquiry. The knowledge product created
by the Expedition team or community can also serve to rapidly convey the results to all
those in the organization whose work can benefit from them.
The "VLE" model is highly scalable. Several Expeditions can share resources and combine
talents when mega-challenges require. The typical duration of Expeditions is 3-month
to one year, depending on the complexity of the issues pursued.
Recent learning expeditions that we designed and facilitated includes one that was organized
by the European Foundation for Management Development, sponsored by IBM and
INSEAD, and has attracted 50 European managers of e-learning programs.
